RAIN DANCE SHAWL

designed by elann

Inspired by the rainy season of the west coast, this reversible garter stitch half circle shawl features an eyelet rain pattern with a playful rain dance edge. It is knit from the top down in 4 sections. It can be worn as a traditional shawl, opened flat and draped over the shoulders, and also, because it's completely reversible, its edge can be turned out for a rolled shawl collar edge, and closed at the center front with a brooch, as pictured above.

If you have trouble printing any of the 5 charts below, save each individually to your own hard drive by right-clicking your mouse in the center of the chart and saving picture. You can then print each chart separately, in landscape orientation, if necessary.

Chart 4 (turn 90 degrees to right to read)

Rows 160 – 199: (Rain dance edging). Following Chart 5 below, you will knit 4 separate rain dance pieces in each of 4 sections (16 in total). You will incorporate extra edge stitch at beg of row 160 by knitting it together with the first st on the chart. At the end of each 20 stitch piece, you will BO at row 200, and then you can either fasten off last st, break yarn, sew in end and then begin next section with new end of yarn, or you can knit continuously as we did, as follows: BO 20 sts at row 200, but do not break yarn. Instead, with RS facing, pick up and knit, and then BO 40 sts evenly spaced along left edge (*PU and K1, BO 1*), ending at point where next 20 st section begins. Last stitch pick and knit will be knit together with 1st stitch in next 20 st section. When you reach the 16th 20 st-section, you will have 21 stitches remaining (20 sts + 1 edge stitch). Continue to work this extra edge stitch as a knit stitch, so that both edges of the shawl are mirror images (2 sts knit before yo at right hand edge and 2 sts knit after yo at left hand edge).
