SUN RAY SHAWL

by Shui Kuen Kozinski

Morning, Spider Web –
On Pearls of Dew,
Sun Ray Play.

The Sun Ray Shawl is a top-down, triangular shawl in 2 mirror image sections. The Sun Ray motif is a modified Ivy pattern from Barbara Walker’s “Charted Knitting Designs, a Third Treasury of Knitting patterns” p.154. Ivy pattern has a 10 row repeat and Sun Ray pattern has a 20 row repeat – all even number rows (wrong side return rows) are purled. The basic structure of the shawl is very simple. On the same row, the single decrease stitch is always in the same direction on one side (right) and mirror image on the other side (left). Therefore, it is a good beginner’s shawl.

Repeat chart 2, row 15-34 five to six times for the desired length, working additional sts into pattern repeats as established.

K 6 rows (3 garter ridges) and bind off all sts very loosely using picot bind off.
Picot bind-off: Insert the right-hand needle into the first stitch on the left-hand (LH) needle, and knit a stitch but do not slip the stitch off the left needle. Slip the new stitch back onto the LH needle, then make a second new stitch as before. Cast off four stitches, then slip the remaining stitch back onto the LH needle. Repeat along the row, making two stitches and casting off four each time.

Finishing:
Weave in loose ends. Soak shawl in warm water for 20 minutes, wrap in towel to remove excess water. Lay flat on a big towel and pull every 5th picot out to form a scallop, and pin to measurement.
Let dry thoroughly, and trim yarn ends to flush.

Abbreviations:
ssk - a left-slanting single decrease
1. Slip 2 stitches separately to right needle as if to knit.
2. Insert tip of left needle into fronts of these stitches, from left to right. Knit them together.
One stitch has been decreased.
k - knit, k2tog - knit 2 sts together, p - purl, R - round or row, st(s) - stitch(es), yo – yarn over.
