Instructions are for the smallest size with larger sizes in parentheses. If only one figure is given, it applies to all sizes. An (0) indicates the instruction does not apply to that size.

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS:
Sweater Jacket: Chest (buttoned) - 22½ (26½, 28)"; Length - 11¼ (12¼, 13¼)"; Sleeve Length - 8 (8½, 9¼)".
Pants: Waist (without elastic) - 22 (23, 24½)"; Length - 14¾ (16, 17¾)".
Hat: One Size/Hat circumference, 16".
Mittens: length of hand, including cuff - 4 (4¾)"

MATERIALS:
- elann.com Esprit - Main Color - A (shown as 2608 Cape Cod Blue); Contrast Colors (CC) - B, C, D, and E (shown as 3794 Wine, 8176 Natural, 5606 Fresh Pesto, and 7009 Chamois) - one ball of each contrast color is sufficient to complete all garments.
Sweater Jacket: 4 (4, 5) balls of A, and CC B, C, D, and E.
Pants: 3 (3, 3) balls of A, and CC B, C, D, E.
Hat: 1 (1, 1) ball of A, and CC B, C, D, E.
Mittens: 1 (1, 1) ball of A, and CC B.

- 4.0mm (US 6) and 4.5mm (US 7) needles, or size needed to obtain correct gauge.
- Sweater Jacket - Five, ¾" buttons
- Pants - ¾ yd, ½" wide elastic
- Hat - 4.5mm (US 7) double-pointed needles


GAUGE:
24 sts and 36 rows = 4"/10cm over st st using larger needles.
please take time to check your gauge before beginning.

Note
When changing colors, twist yarns on WS to prevent holes and carry color not in use loosely at back.

GLOSSARY:
Inc 1 - Knit into front and back of stitch to make one stitch.
SKP - Slip 1, knit 1, pass slip stitch over - 1 stitch decreased.
SK2P - Slip 1, knit 2 stitches together, pass slip stitch over - 2 stitches decreased.
SSK - Slip 2 stitches knitwise, one at a time to right-hand needle. Insert tip of left-hand needle into the front of these two stitches from left to right, and knit the 2 stitches together - 1 stitch decreased.

I-Cord
Row 1 *K4. Do not turn. Slide stitches to right end of needle. Rep from *.

SWEATER JACKET:

BACK:
With larger needles and Col A, cast on 68 (80, 86) sts. Work 15 rows in st st.
Row 16 (WS) Knit. Cont to work even in st st until piece measures 12 (13, 14)" from beg, ending with a WS row.

Shape Neck
K22 (26, 28) sts, join second ball of yarn, bind off 24 (28, 30) sts for back of neck, k to end. Cont to work both sides separately but at the same time, dec 1 st at each neck edge every alt row 3 times. Work even until piece measures 13 (14, 15)" from beg, ending with a WS row. Next row Bind off rem 19 (23, 25) sts on each shoulder.

RIGHT FRONT:
With larger needles and Col A, cast on 31 (37, 39) sts. Work 15 rows in st st.
Row 16 (WS) Knit. Cont to work even in st st until piece measures 11 (12, 13)" from beg, ending with a WS row.

Shape Neck
Bind off 5 (6, 6) sts at beg of row (neck edge), work to end. Next row Work in st st. Cont to bind off at neck edge every alt row: 3 sts once, 2 sts twice, and dec 1 st 0 (1, 1) time - 19 (23, 25) sts. Work even in st st until piece measures 13 (14, 15)" from beg, ending with a WS row. Next row Bind off all sts.

LEFT FRONT:
Work as for right front, reversing shaping.

RIGHT SLEEVE:
With larger needles and Col A, cast on 40 (40, 48) sts. Work in st st for 15 rows. Join Col C (Col B when working left sleeve). Purl two rows, knit one row, purl two rows. Next row (RS) Join Cols A and E, work Rows 1-12 of Check Pattern. Join Col B (Col D when working left sleeve). Knit two rows, purl one row, knit one row. Next row (RS) Knit, inc 8 (10, 8) sts evenly across row - 48 (50, 56) sts. Join Col A, purl one row. Cont to work in st st, inc 1 st at each edge every 9th (6th, 8th) row 5 (8, 7) times-58 (66, 70) sts. Work even until piece measures 9¾ (10¼, 11)" from beg, ending with a WS row. Next row Bind off all sts.

LEFT SLEEVE:
Work as for right sleeve, noting color changes.

FINISHING:
Block pieces to measurements. On back and fronts, turn lower hems to inside. Sew hems to WS and close ends.

Button Band
(RS) (worked on right front edge for boy's garment, on left front edge for girl's garment) With smaller needles and Col A, pick up and k67 (71, 79) sts along front edge. Row 1 (WS) *P1, k1; rep from *, end p1. Row 2 (RS) *K1, p1; rep from *, end k1. Rep Rows 1 and 2 twice more. Row 7 Rep Row 1. Next row Bind off all sts in rib. Place markers on button band, one at ½" below top edge, one at ½" above lower edge, and three spaced evenly between.

Buttonhole Band
Work same as button band for 2 rows. Row 3 *Work in rib to marker, bind off 1 st for buttonhole; rep from * four times more, work in rib to end. Row 4 Work in rib and cast on 1 st over bound-off st of previous row. Complete as for button band.
Join fronts to back at shoulders.

Collar
(RS) With larger needles and Col A, beg and end at center top of front bands, pick up and knit around neck edge: 19 (21, 24) sts to right shoulder seam, 34 (38, 40) sts across back, 19 (21, 24) sts down left front - 72 (80, 88) sts. Next row (WS) Purl. Cont to work in st st until 18 rows completed from beg. (WS) Join Col B. Purl two rows. Knit one row. Purl two rows. (RS) Join Cols A and E, work Rows 1-12 Check Pattern. Join Col C, knit two rows, purl one row. Next row (WS) Bind off all sts kwise, leaving a length of Col C for sewing. Fold collar to inside along Col B band. Sew bound-off edge of collar to WS of neck edge and close ends.

Turn lower sleeve hems to inside. Sew hems to WS and close ends. Place markers 4¾ (5½, 5¾)" down from shoulder seam on fronts and back for armholes. Sew top of sleeves to body between markers. Sew side and sleeve seams. Sew on buttons to match buttonholes.

PANTS:

RIGHT LEG:
With larger needles and Col A, cast on 40 (40, 48) sts. Work in st st for 15 rows. Join Col B (Col C when working left pant leg), purl two rows, knit one row, purl two rows. (RS) Join Cols A and E, work Rows 1-12 of Check Pattern. Join Col D (Col B when working left pant leg), knit two rows, purl one row, knit one row. Next row (RS) Knit, inc 12 (14, 8) sts evenly across row-52 (54, 56) sts. Join Col A, purl one row. Cont to work in st st, inc 1 st at each edge every 4th row 14 (14, 15) times - 80 (82, 86) sts. Work even until piece measures 10¼ (10½, 11)" from beg, ending with a WS row.

Crotch Shaping
Bind off 3 sts at beg next 2 rows, 2 sts at beg next 2 rows, then dec 1 st at each edge once-68 (70, 74) sts. Work even until piece measures 4¾ (6, 7)" above beg of crotch shaping, ending with a WS row. Join Col D, *knit two rows, purl two rows*. Join Col B, rep from * to *. Join Col C, rep from * to *. Join Col A, work 8 rows in st st. Next row Bind off all sts.

LEFT LEG:
Work as for right leg, noting color changes.

FINISHING:
Block pieces to measurements. Turn lower leg hems to inside. Sew hems to WS and close ends. Sew pant sections together at center front and back, from top edge to beg of crotch shaping. Sew leg seams. Turn waistband to inside along Col C band. Cut a length of elastic to desired waist size. Sew waistband to WS, covering elastic.

HAT:

With larger needles and Col D, cast on 96 sts. Purl one row. Knit one row. Purl two rows. (RS) Join Col B, *knit two rows, purl two rows.* Join Col C, rep from * to *. Join Col A and work even in st st until piece measures 3½" from beg, ending with a WS row.

Crown Shaping
*K1, SKP, k13, k2tog, k1; rep from * 4 times more, end k1 (86 sts). Purl one row. Cont to dec in this manner every other row, having 2 sts less beween decrease stitches every decrease row 6 times more (26 sts). Purl one row. Next row (RS) *K1, SK2P, k1; rep from * 4 times more, end k1 (16 sts). Purl one row. Next row (RS) K2tog across row (8 sts). Next row (WS) P2tog across row (4 sts). Cut Col A, leaving a length for sewing seam. Join Col D and with dp needles, work I-Cord for 1". Bind off all sts. Tie I-Cord length into a knot. Sew back seam of hat.

MITTENS:

RIGHT MITTEN
With smaller needles and Col A, cast on 24 (28) sts. Row 1 (RS) *K1, p1; rep from * to end. Rep Row 1 until 12 rows completed from beg. Change to larger needles and Col B. Knit two rows, purl two rows.

Thumb Gusset
Join Col A. Row 1 (RS) K14 (16) sts, pmon, inc 1, k1, inc 1, pmon, k7 (9) sts—26 (30) sts. Row 2 and every alt row Purl. Row 3 K to marker, sl marker, inc 1, k3, inc 1, sl marker, k to end—28 (32) sts. Row 4 Purl. Cont to work as est, inc 2 sts between markers in same manner as Row 3, every alt row until 32 (36) sts on needle, ending with a RS row. Next row Purl.

Thumb
(RS) K25 (27) sts. Turn. Cast on 1 st to LH needle. Including the cast-on stitch, p12. Turn. Cast on 1 st to LH needle. On these 13 sts, work even in st st until thumb measures 1¼ (1½)", ending with a WS row. Next row (RS) K1, *k2tog; rep from * to end (7 sts). Cut yarn and thread end through rem sts. Draw up yarn and fasten securely, leaving a length of yarn for sewing. Sew thumb seam.

Hand
With RS facing, join yarn to last st on RH needle, pick up and k 3 sts at base of thumb and k7 (9) sts on LH needle—24 (28) sts. Next row (WS) Purl. Cont to work even in st st until piece measures 3 (4)" from beg, ending with a WS row.

Shape Top of Hand
Row 1 (RS) *K1, SSK, k6 (8) sts, k2tog, k1; rep from * to end—20 (24) sts.
Row 2 and every alt row Purl.
Row 3 *K1, SSK, k4 (6) sts, k2tog, k1; rep from * to end—16 (20) sts.
Cont to dec 4 sts every alt row, in same manner as Row 3, until 8 (12) sts on needle. Next row (WS) Bind off all sts pwise. Sew top and side seams of mitten.

LEFT MITTEN
Work as for right mitten until beginning of thumb gusset.

Thumb Gusset
Join Col A. Row 1 (RS) K7 (9) sts, pmon, inc 1, k1, inc 1, pmon, k14 (16) sts—26 (30) sts. Row 2 and every alt row Purl. Row 3 K to marker, sl marker, inc 1, k3, inc 1, sl marker, k to end—28 (32) sts. Row 4 Purl. Cont to work as est, inc 2 sts between markers in same manner as Row 3, every alt row until 32 (36) sts on needle, ending with a RS row. Next row Purl.

Thumb
(RS) K18 (20) sts. Turn. Cast on 1 st to LH needle. Including the cast-on stitch, p12. Turn. Cast on 1 st to LH needle. On these 13 sts, work even in st st and complete thumb as for right mitten.

Hand
With RS facing, join yarn to last st on RH needle, pick up and k 3 sts at base of thumb and k14 (16) sts on LH needle—24 (28) sts. Next row (WS) Purl. Cont to work even in st st until piece measures 3 (4)" from beg, ending with a WS row.

Shape Top of Hand
Complete as for right mitten.
