GOLD NUGGET SHAWL IN NILO

by Shui Kuen Kozinski
knit in elann.com Nilo by Lorill Anderson

Panning in the creek:
hidden in the gravel -
sparkling nuggets of gold.

The Gold Nugget Shawl is a top-down, triangular shape in two identical sections.

The motif's primary characteristics are its feeling of openness, enhanced by a sparkling lightness. It seems to touch people's imaginations, inspiring comparisons with elegant oriental fans, flower baskets, Crowns, and, naturally, gold nuggets. It's a sort of fun ink blot test for knitters: what do you see? This is a knitted lace, because every row is patterned. The motif is achieved by double yo and p1, k1b into the double yo of previous row. To make it simpler for knitting, I modified all the rows in the chart to read and knit from right to left.

Experience:
Intermediate/experienced

Knitting Notes:
1) Both double yo and p1, k1b into the double yo of previous row are very loose, might be difficult to handle at first.
2) All yo follows with purl, should wrap the yarn around the needle. 3) A swatch of the first 18 rows is recommended before the project. It will help familiarize the pattern. It goes quite fast after the first repeat. 4) All rows in the chart reads and knits from right to left.

Size:
80 inches wide at widest point by 40 inches long at longest point after blocking.

Materials:
7 balls of elann.com Nilo.
6 mm (US 10) and 6.5 mm (US 10 ½) 32 inch circular needle.
Ring markers or slip markers.
6 mm (US J-10) crochet hook for provisional cast on.
Scrap yarn.

Gauge:
14 sts per 4 inches over pattern sts before blocking and 12 sts per 4 inches after blocking.

Charts:

NOTE:
All rows in the chart read and knit from right to left. The pattern sts of right section and left section are identical. Rows 1-18 are the top of the shawl, rows 19-30 are the body of the shawl, and rows 31-36 are the edging of the shawl.

INSTRUCTIONS:

Cast on: Shawl begins at the center back using provisional cast on as follows: with contrast color scrap yarn and crochet hook, chain 8. With shawl yarn pick up and knit 3 sts in the bumps on the back side of the center 3 chains - 3 sts. Knit 10 rows. Next row, K3, pick up and knit 1 st in each of the 5 garter ridges along selvedge edge of piece, unzip scrap yarn chain to expose 3 sts at base of the piece, place these 3 sts onto left needle, K3. (11 sts total)

Top of the shawl: (see chart row 1-18):
Center stitch K1 or P1, and both sides of edging K3 are in capital letter and bold printed.
