by Libby Grant

Knit in Peruvian Pure Alpaca Fina by Lorill Anderson

Level of Difficulty:
Recommended for experienced knitters.

Size:
Approximately 75" wide, by 35" long, after blocking

Materials:
- 8 balls of elann.com Peruvian Pure Alpaca Fina.
- Stitch Markers.
- 5.5 mm (US 9) and 6 mm (US 10) knitting needles, or sizes required to obtain correct gauge.

Gauge:
24 stitches and 20 rows = 4", measured over stockinette on smaller needles.

Panel separation motif:
YO, slip 2 sts together as if to K2Tog, K next st, pass 2 slipped stitches over, YO.
This stitch combination forms the panel separation motif and is used a total of 6 times - between each of the 5 panels, and also along each edge of the shawl. This is to be done on every row between the pattern repeats. The chart DOES NOT denote this, please be sure to add in the panel separation motif.

Charts:

Reading the Charts:
The charts are to be repeated 5 times per row when working the shawl. They are worked from right to left. All wrong side rows for the body of the shawl are worked as follows: K2, Purl to the last 2 sts, K2.

Instructions:
This shawl is knit from the top down. It has 5 sections with the panel separation motif separating each section and along each edge. The increases are done as follows: In each section on an increase row, knit into the front and back of the first stitch in the section, knit in pattern to the last 2 stitches of the section, knit into the front and back of the next stitch, knit 1. The bind off edging is the exception, explained below.
With smaller needles, CO 19 sts.
R1 (WS): Purl
R2 (RS): (K in front and back) 18 times, K1 (37 sts)
R3: Purl
R4: K2, (YO, slip 2 sts together as if to K2Tog, K next st, pass 2 slipped stitches over, YO, K3) 5 times, YO, slip 2 sts together as if to K2Tog, K next st, pass 2 slipped stitches over, YO, K2. (37 sts.)
R5: K2, Purl to last 2 sts, K2 (NOTE: this will be the back side of the shawl for the rest of the pattern)
R6: K2, (YO, slip 2 sts together as if to K2Tog, K next st, pass 2 slipped stitches over, YO, K f&b, K f&b, K1) 5 times, YO, slip 2 sts together as if to K2Tog, K next st, pass 2 slipped stitches over, YO, K2. (47 sts)
R7: K2, Purl to last 2 sts, K2
R8: Begin chart 1
R9: K2, P to last 2 sts, K2
R10: Increase row: K f&b, pattern to last 2 sts, K f&b, K1. Working from chart 1, you will be increasing every 4 rows as established (i.e. Rows 14, 18, 22, etc.)
When finished with chart 1, work chart 2 ending with a wrong side row.
On row 120 of chart 2, change to larger needles.

Edging:
NOTE: 8 Set-up rows are worked before beginning the edging chart on Row 2.
Every even numbered (RS) row of the edging consumes 1 stitch from the body of the shawl. All wrong side rows are purled even across with the exception of Row 1 which starts with a P2tog.

Each repeat of the edging pattern should match perfectly to either one diamond at the bottom of the shawl, or the center stitch of the panel separation motif - i.e. each point of the edging will either mirror the point of a diamond, or line up with the center of a panel separation motif.

Edging Set-up:
With larger needles, and right side facing, CO 13 stitches, turn.
Row 1: Knit across and knit the 13th stitch of the edging together with the first stitch of the shawl. Turn.
Row 2: Knit. Turn.
Row 3: Same as Row 1. Turn.
Row 4: Knit. Turn.
Row 5: Same as Row 1. Turn.
Row 6: Knit. Turn.
Row 7: Same as row 1. Turn. NOTE: You should have just used the center stitch of the first panel separation motif.
Row 8: Purl across all stitches. (Modified Row 1 of Edging pattern)

Edging pattern:
Follow the chart starting on Row 2. Work through to Row 22. Repeat chart, starting next and all following chart repeats on Row 1. Repeat edging pattern until 4 shawl stitches remain (ending with Row 22 – do not knit the extra shawl stitch from the body of the shawl).

Edging Finish:
Row 1 (WS): Knit. Turn.
Row 2: Knit across and knit the 13th st of the edging together with the first stitch of the shawl. Turn.
Repeat these 2 rows an additional 3 times, all shawl stitches have now been bound off.

Block shawl and enjoy!
